TUITION FEES

The State Government of Baden-Württemberg has enacted Tuition Fees for International Students, which do not come from EU countries, and for Students of an additional degree progamme. Further details and forms can be found on this page.

TUITION FEES FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

As an international student of a higher education institute in Baden-Württemberg you are generally obliged to pay tuition fees of EUR 1,500 per semester.

Students enrolled before the fall/winter semester 2017/2018 can finish their studies free of charge. Tuition fees are to be paid in case of a change of the course of studies (also from bachelor to master) or university study place.

There are exceptions where international students are not chargeable.

How much must be paid?

The tuition fee for international students is 1,500 euros per semester. This fee is to be paid in addition to the semester contribution.

Who doesn't have to pay tuition fees?

  1. Citizens of the European Union or European Economic Area EU or EEA (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway)

  1. International students with a German higher education entrance qualification

    This includes:

    1. general higher education entrance qualification
    2. subject-linked higher education entrance qualification
    3. higher education entrance qualification for a University of applied sciences
    4. A school qualification plus a Delta examination, as far as the subject-linked university entrance qualification was acquired in Germany
    5. A recognized vocational upgrading training exam, if taken in Germany
    6. A professional qualification and an aptitude test, if the required work experience was completed in Germany
    7. Further German educational background, which was approved by the “Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs“ of the state of Baden-Württemberg

  1. International students
  1. with a residence permit for Germany, not only for study purposes but also for family-related reasons (e.g. spouse, life partner or child of a German citizen, an EU/EEA citizen or a foreigner with a settlement permit), because of fleeing from the homeland or for other reasons.
  2. who have been in Germany for at least five years in total and have then been legally employed.
  3. where at least one of the parents has resided and worked legally in Germany for three of the six years before the program of study started.
  4. who have obtained a bachelor's AND a master's degree or a state examination degree or a Diplom degree or a Magister degree in Germany.

  1. International students are free on request
  1. during the leave of absence,
  2. during a practical study semester,
  3. with a residence permit according to § 55 asylum law and the nationality of Eritrea, Iraq, Iran, Syria or Somalia,
  4. with a disability according to § 2 Neuntes Buch Sozialgesetzbuch which impedes studying.

  1. International students as participants of an exchange programme between Germany and other countries or as participants of an exchange programme with the home university are free

    1. when enrolled at a partner university abroad in an international collaborative study programme and the joint programme schedules a mandatory stay at the partner university or universities and the programme leads to a joint degree or a respective degree of the participating universities; the exemption of tuition fees ist to be reciprocatively negotiated (e.g. study programmes Bachelor International Management, Master European Management Studies).
    2. when enrolled at a partner university and visit within the framework of an exchange agreement with the partner university, usually in the course of up to two semesters and without the goal to acquire a higher education degree in Baden-Württemberg and the exemption of tuition fees has been negotiated reciprocatively (e.g. Erasmus students).
      „Free-Mover“, students who do not achieve the abroad semester at a partnered university, are not exempted from these tuition fees.

Tuition Fees for an additional degree programme

As a student of an additional degree programme in Baden-Württemberg you are generally obliged to pay tuition fees of 650 Euro per Semester.

An additional degree is a second or further Bachelor or Master study programme after already graduating from an academic degree programme or equivalent in the Federal Republic of Germany.

Students who have been enrolled before winter semester 2017/18 can finalize the study programm free of charge. With any change of study course or programme (as well as from Bachelor to Master), or location of university, tuition fees will be charged.

There are exemptions by which the students are not obliged to pay tuition fees.

How much must be paid?

The tuition fee for an additional degree programme ist 650 Euro per semester. This fee is to be paid in addition to the semester contribution.

The tuition fee for an additional degree is not charged when the tuition fee for International Students is already to be paid.

Who does not need to pay tuition fees?

1. Students do not pay tuition fees

  1. in a first Bachelor or Master degree programme
  2. when changing subjects within a study programme or when changing the study programme without a degree
  3. when completing a parallel study programm (tuition fees are then charged in the semester following the first degree)
  4. when degrees have been completed abroad
  5. for degree programmes of the continuing education system: MBA full- and part-time, programmes of the Knowledge Foundation

2. Students will be exempted on request

  1. in leave of absence
  2. during a practical study semester
  3. with a disability which impedes studying.
