Health Insurance

Students are legally required to have health insurance. You can only enrol at the university once you have provided proof of insurance. Please note the following:

  • Under German law, a student’s private health insurance policy (whether foreign or German) must not include any limitations on benefits. Travel insurance policies, for example, often set a maximum limit of €30,000 or USD 100,000 for medical treatment. This type of policy will not be accepted for enrolment; your insurance policy must provide “unlimited” cover.
  • If you already have valid private health insurance, you must additionally apply for an exemption from statutory health insurance. The exemption certificate can be issued by any statutory health insurance provider in Germany.
  • Your health insurance must cover both inpatient and outpatient treatment. If the policy includes an excess, this must not exceed €5,000. Other services included in the travel package (e.g. accident insurance or repatriation cover) may be subject to a financial limit.
  • Your enrolment at Reutlingen University officially begins on 1 September (winter semester) or 1 March (summer semester). You must therefore provide proof of adequate health insurance cover from 1 September/March until the final day of your stay. For example, if you arrive in mid-September, you must still provide proof of insurance for the entire month of September in order to meet the enrolment requirements.
  • Without proof of valid health insurance, your enrolment process will remain incomplete and you will not receive your student ID card or access details for your university account.

Please select the option that best applies to your situation:

  1. EU students:
Bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and have it checked by a German health insurance provider. You will then be exempt from the German statutory health insurance requirement.
  2. Non-EU students with health insurance from their home country:
Bring copies of your insurance card and policy documents (either in German or English) and have them checked by a health insurance provider. You will then be informed whether your insurance is recognised or whether you need to take out German health insurance. Depending on your situation, you may also be able to purchase supplementary insurance to extend the cover provided by your international health insurance policy.
  3. Non-EU students without health insurance from their home country:
The German Academic Exchange Service DAAD provides useful information on German health insurance. We recommend taking some time before your arrival to research the different health insurance providers and choose the option that best suits your needs. You may also contact coordinators in Reutlingen or the RIO at any time. Further information on health insurance.
