Glossary

Many university-specific and administrative terms are highly specialised and often cannot be found in standard dictionaries or translation tools. To assist staff at Reutlingen University with translating such terms and to promote consistency in language use, this glossary has been developed. The university has adopted British English as its standard.

The glossary is a living document and is continuously expanded by the Institute for Foreign Languages. It is not intended to be exhaustive.

Abitur (German university entrance qualification)

school leaving certificate (also: secondary school certificate; A-levels (BE); high school diploma (AE))

Die Standardübersetzung '(German) university entrance qualification' ist zwar korrekt, wird aber von internationalen Lesern und Bewerbern oft nicht verstanden. Deswegen wird empfohlen, kontextabhängig vorzugehen und die Übersetzung von 'Abitur' bzw. 'Hochschulzulassungsberechtigung' je nach Zielgruppe anzupassen.
