Ethics & Sustainability Programme

Reutlingen University not only imparts theoretical knowledge, but also offers practical guidance and provides content and teaching methods beyond the disciplinary limitations of specific study programmes. We want to encourage students to think ahead and to re-examine their perspectives, and to encourage them to follow their own path in their studies. Therefore, our ethics and sustainability programme consists of three focal points: ethics, sustainable development and social skills. Students benefit from this today and tomorrow, in everyday life and in their careers.

Our offers

With the "Ethikum", we offer students the opportunity to receive recognition of their knowledge and skills in ethics, sustainable development and social competences. The Referat für Technik- und Wissenschaftsethik (RTWE; Department for Technology and Science Ethics) offers students at all universities of applied sciences in Baden-Württemberg the opportunity to obtain such a certificate. In order to do so, students must participate in RTWE or university seminars and acquire at least three graded certificates and 100 "ethics points".

If desired, the certificate can be issued with the UNESCO BNE label (UNESCO World Programme of Action: Education for Sustainable Development).

Every semester we offer varied seminars and workshops on sustainable development, ethics and social skills. You can register for our events via studierenplus. In the RELAX portal, you can also print out your own certificates after successful participation. The number of ethics points refers to the respective preparation and participation in the courses. It is also possible to write an additional report or a term paper for which you will receive further ethics points and, if you wish, a grade.

In addition to our in-house courses, you may also attend nationwide courses organised by the Department for Technology and Science Ethics (RTWE) or other universities in the region.

Further information on ethics courses can be found for example here:

All events may be counted towards the Ethics Certificate.

Reutlingen University not only wants to impart knowledge to students, but also motivate them to actively participate in shaping our society and to take on social responsibilities for themselves and others.
A number of very different local institutions are looking forward to your support in this regard. The  DoIt! project between the university community and the Bruderhaus Diakonie is our oldest learning cooperation. Students receive 25 ethics points and a graded certificate for participation and writing a report.

More collaborations:

You have already been socially active prior to your studies? Wonderful! You can also submit a report on this in the colloquium and receive ethics points.
