English Courses

All courses run over 30 teaching hours and carry 2 ECTS credits.

We do not offer any beginners' courses in English; the lowest level course is B1 (lower intermediate).

Under the heading "Intercultural Communication - Study Strategies and Learning Techniques" you will find information about a number of workshops in English on various topics. These workshops run for between 6 and 10 teaching hours and do not carry credits.

Focus on Business - English B1: WiSe 19/20

You have good general English skills at B1 level and would now like to develop your knowledge of English for the workplace, including how to write business emails, make telephone calls and give a presentation. You will be able to consolidate your existing skills, sort out those "typical" mistakes and learn new, business-oriented vocabulary.
Course contents include: Presentation language and practice; Language for describing graphs, facts and figures; Emails; Telephoning; Grammar consolidation; Discussions, role plays and pair work based on relevant business themes.

The grade at the end of the course will be based on a short presentation with a written summary and a final test. 

Regular attendance of at least 80% is required

General and Business English, Focus on Speaking (B2-C1): WiSe 19/20

This course is taught in three parallel groups. Priority will be given to students taking the bachelor’s programme in Textile Technology / Textile Management, but students from other programmes may also register if places are available. The course mainly focusses on spoken English, with a view to giving a presentation in English on a topic arising from students’ degree programmes, and includes rhetorical and psychological as well as linguistic elements.

Relevant vocabulary is practiced. Grammar will be revised as necessary.

Prerequisite: English level B2-C1

Assessment will be based on: at least 80% attendance, active participation, presentation.

English for a Semester Abroad (B2-C1): WiSe 19/20

This course is aimed at students planning to spend a semester in an English-speaking environment, either studying or in an internship.

All four language skills are covered: Reading of academic texts both for gist and in detail; Writing for essays / reports and lecture notes; Listening exercises based on a variety of different accents; Speaking in both academic and social contexts; intercultural topics.

Assessment is based on a number of short tests throughout the semester and a final exam. Regular attendance of at least 80% is required.

Discussion and Debate (B2-C1): WiSe 19/20

This course is intended for students who have been learning English for around 8 or 9 years and who wish to refresh and improve their skills, particularly in the areas of listening and speaking. Current topics from business, science, politics, and culture form the basis for discussions (moderated in part by the participants), short presentations and debate. You will widen your English vocabulary and learn how to present your views effectively. There will be some written tasks, and grammar will be revised as necessary.

Whilst all four language skills are practiced, the main focus of this course is on oral communication. A range of authentic written and audio materials on current topical issues form the basis for a range of activities, enabling you  to develop your listening, critical thinking and presentation skills. You will build your vocabulary and learn to respond appropriately to new ideas. Grammar will be revised as necessary.

Scientific and Technical English (B1-B2): WiSe 19/20

This course is aimed at students on technical and scientific programmes. The course contents are based on levels B1-B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference. Grammar topics from levels B1 and B2.1 will be revised. Using material from the fields of mechanical engineering, mechatronics, biology, chemistry and informatics, you will practise reading scientific texts and writing essays, scripts and reports; listening exercises will include a variety of accents, and you will practise speaking in an academic context.

Assessment will be based on: at least 80% attendance, active participation, intermediate tests, final exam.
