Foreign Languages

Language courses are offered each semester and are open to students in all Schools. The semester dates of the language courses follow those in the Schools of Applied Chemistry, Engineering, Informatics, and Textiles & Design. Students in the ESB Business School, where semester dates may differ, are welcome to join in the courses wherever practical.

In winter semester 2022-23 some foreign language courses will be online, others will take place in the classroom. Detailed information can be found under the relevant language heading. You should register for all courses on Relax before the first meeting. There will be no "taster session". If you wish to withdraw from a course, please inform the teacher or the Institute for Foreign Languages ( Where practical (i.e. not after the third meeting), someone from the waiting list will take your place.

The foreign language courses run over 30 teaching hours, and students can expect to spend a similar amount of time on language work outside of teaching hours. For each successfully completed course (at least 80% attendance, active participation, successful completion of all assignments) we award 2 ECTS credits. Most courses run over 15 sessions of 90 minutes each, but we also offer some compact courses with 10 meetings of 135 minutes each.

In the final week of the language courses there is usually a written examination. However, because of the changes in teaching methods during the corona pandemic, the final examination may be replaced by other types of testing. Details will be provided in your course.

Please note: if you simply stop attending a language class or workshop without informing us that you wish to withdraw, you will not be allowed to attend IfF courses and workshops in the following semester.

In addition to language courses, we also offer a number of other ways for you to improve your language skills: Workshops in English, Tandem Programme.
