Exchange and ERASMUS students

The European Union's Lifelong Learning Programme supports international cooperation in a wide range of areas of general education. Within this framework, the ERASMUS programme for higher education supports periods of study abroad for both students and teachers.

Since 1987, over one-and-a-half million students have benefited from ERASMUS mobility grants. Under the new
Lifelong Learning Programme, the European Commission aims to have a total of 3 million individuals participating in student mobility by 2012.

The majority of our incoming international students come from one of our partner universities worldwide and study within the framework of ERASMUS or other international cooperation agreements.

Prerequisites

Exchange and ERASMUS students need not normally fulfil any special admission requirements beyond their recommendation or nomination by their home university, or any additional requirements which may be set out in the relevant partnership agreement.

Application

There is no general application deadline for exchange and ERASMUS programmes at Reutlingen University. Application and registration procedures are set out in the partnership agreement, or will be notified to students by their home university. Usually, application and registration forms will not be completed until students have arrived in Reutlingen.

Nevertheless, you should apply in time to make sure that you meet the application deadline of the student dormitories. Your Coordinator at Reutlingen University will inform you about dates, deadlines, meetings and arrival times. General information on our semester dates is available here.

Exchange and ERASMUS students must bring the following:

  • the ERASMUS Learning Agreement of your home University, or an application form for ERASMUS students (provided through your home institution)
  • a formal letter from your home institution certifying that you are registered there as a student for the period you are in Reutlingen, and on what programme you are enrolled. This letter must be in German, French, or English
  • a resumé or CV, typed, dated and signed
  • a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) (EU-students). Non-EU students click here for further information
  • 3 passport-type photos
  • 61,50 EUR to pay the semester fee for student services
  • a valid passport or ID-card. Non-EU students should check visa regulations carefully.
  • enough money, if you don't yet have access to a bank account in Germany, to cover all of the initial expenses during the first week or so of your stay (these will include semester fees, a deposit of two months' rent plus your first month's actual rent, a semester ticket for public transport etc.)

Courses in Reutlingen

Before coming to Reutlingen, consult your home institution about the courses you are required to attend, and ascertain how many marks, grades or credit points you need to take back at the end of your stay here.

Upon your arrival, staff in your School in Reutlingen will assist you in finalizing your timetable. Depending on the course, marks, grades and credit points are obtained by either a seminar paper (Referat) delivered in class, an individual project (Hausarbeit), or a formal written or oral exam (Klausur). All papers and projects submitted must conform to the usual requirements regarding footnotes, bibliography, etc.

Reutlingen University requires a relatively high number of contact hours for domestic students, normally between 24 - 30 hours of lectures per week. As an exchange student, you will need to talk to your tutor to see how many classes and hours you will have to take in order to fulfil the requirements of your Learning Agreement and to acquire the required number of ECTS credits.
